BULLYING

The 6th grade students are learning all about Bullying. They are exploring the following:

What is bullying?
What are the roles in a bullying situation?
Why do people bully?
How does bullying feel?
What is the anti-bullying law all about?
What can you do about bullying?
                               

Students will be making PSA's (public service announcements) in computer class all about bullying. 

Students will be watching videos and doing activities form the Pacer Foundation.

GRADE 7 - COMMUNICATION

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS ARE SKILLS THAT NEED TO BE PRACTICED





Students in 7th grade will practicing their communication skills for the next few classes.
They will be using  "I" statements and  will refrain from the use of  any communication blockers.
 (Blaming, Insulting, Mind Reading, Globalizing, and more).

Hopefully they will continue practicing these skill at home.

GRADE 8 - TEAM WORK / GOAL SETTING


TEAM WORK and GOAL SETTING
is the current 
Health and Wellness topic for the 
8th graders this week.

Students will be working together in small groups/teams
practicing their communication and decision making skills.
Students will be responsible for completing 
Lessons from the Geese, 
 the Winter Survival and Summer Survival activities 
in their small groups.








GRADE 7 -Tools of Tolerance

TEACHING ACCEPTANCE / THE TOOLS OF TOLERANCE
is the first unit in Health and Wellness 
with our 7th graders.  

Students will be asked to write about an individual that has worked to overcome an obstacle in his or her life.  Students will learn as much as they can about the individual and the obstacle.  Students  will briefly share their findings with their classmates.  All students will receive a document in google classroom with the following questions


OVERVIEW:   Who is the individual?  What is the obstacle?
                          What are some characteristics the individual may have?
                          What may have caused the obstacle?
                          What is the most important thing the class should know?

GRADING POLICY

Class Participation – Students will be expected to participate in class activities and discussions. Please dress appropriately if you are in person. Sneakers and comfortable clothing. We will be going outside. Class participation also includes actively listening to others as well as expressing one's own ideas.  The right to “pass” or not participate in a particular activity will be respected.

Folders and Journals- Students are asked to bring in a 2 pocket folder, a small notebook, and a pen or pencil to class.  Students will be expected to maintain both a tangible folder and digital Health folder on google drive. If the student is absent or misses a class it is the students responsibility to complete any missed work.  It is the students responsibility to check their google classroom. 

Assessments- Students will be assessed through a variety of styles which may include: individual projects,

group projects, presentations, current events, quizzes, writing assessments, etc., Rubrics will be handed

COMMUNITY SERVICE FORMS DUE JUNE 16

 Students have been informed about the Community Service Learning component since the start of the school year.   It is the students  responsibility to submit these forms by June 16.

Community Service

Community Service is an important, positive opportunity not only for the community but the student as well. The research regarding self-esteem, resiliency, and community relationships indicates a very strong connection that can result in a strong, meaningful experience for all those involved. Service learning provides opportunities for students to be involved in real life situations beyond the curriculum/classroom and into the community to help foster the development of a sense of caring about others.

Expectations:

Grade 6 – 1 hour 

Grade 7 – 2 hours 

Grade 8 – 3 hours

  1. Students must complete the total number of hours for his/her grade level before the end of the school year. A due date in June will be assigned.

  2. Verification sheet and reflection questions must be completed with thoughtful responses that appropriately reflects the experience.

7th grade Endocrine/Reproductive System

7th grade students will be learning  about the Endocrine System/Reproductive System 

Topics that will be discussed. 
  • The Endocrine System
  • Anatomy of the male and female reproductive system
  • Stages of development from conception to adulthood




**We will be going over the Puberty and Maturation lesson. 

 

Puberty/Maturation Lesson

TERM 3 - HEALTH TOPICS/LETTER

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Health Education is an integral part of the educational experience here at Littleton Middle School.  The course provides cognitive information and behavioral skills necessary for students to deal with various life situations, choices and consequences. During term 3 students will learn information about the physical, emotional, and social changes all young people experience while developing during puberty.   All lessons will be co-ed and taught during the students regularly scheduled health class.  Information will be presented in a balanced, age appropriate, factual way respecting each student.    The following topics will be addressed during term 3. 

Grade 6 students will be presented with a lesson on Maturation/Puberty.  Students will receive the booklet  Who Knew? The Growing Up Issue This booklet  addresses the physical, emotional and social changes that take place during puberty. This lesson will be presented in the beginning of June.


Grade 7 students will review what happens during puberty while focusing on the The Endocrine System and learning about the male and female reproductive systems.  These lessons will be presented at the end of May. 

Grade 8 students will learn about HIV/AIDS during the disease unit and then  will have a lesson about  Relationships.  Abstinence will continuously be stressed. These lessons will be presented in the beginning of May.

Under the Massachusetts law and School Committee policy, you may exempt your child from any portion of the human sexuality unit of the curriculum. No student who is exempt from this portion of the curriculum will be penalized.  Please email me at tbuonacore@littletonps.org if you would like to excuse your child from any portion of the curriculum.
